Highlighter Tool Add on for Google Docs

Instructional Technology Tip: 
A free Highlighter tool to enhance Google Docs by highlighting with a custom set of colors. Yet, even more powerful is you can extract the highlights by color or by sequence onto a separate document. 


My Thoughts:
Can a highlighter tool really enhance student learning? Well, I feel this easy to use add will speak for itself.   I have coached teachers to use this add on to use in a variety of ways when analyzing Google Docs.  Secondary students have extracted their evidence based notes when doing research, while primary students have used the tools to correctly identify literary elements of a story.   With the option of students creating their own highlighter set or importing one from the teacher, this an easy instructional technology integration tool for the classroom.

Let's take a look at the Highlight Tool add on for Google Docs from two different angles - Student and Teacher!  First the student approach, which streamlines creating evidence notes for your students in a matter of minutes.

For the Student:
1. Inside a Google Doc - click Add Ons in the menu bar, choose get add ons



2. Search for the Highlight Tool add on and install it by clicking the blue free button



3. Click Add On - Highlight Tool - Start to bring up the side bar

4. Start highlighting the document a click the color you want to highlight with


5. When complete, export your highlights by sequence or color to a new google doc


For the Teacher:


1. Create your own highlighter set for students to import or just view their highlighted doc



Click Add Ons - Highlight Tool and choose import after you click link above

To create your own set of highlights and names for students do the following:

1. Create a custom set of highlighter by clicking blue create highlighters button

2. When complete - choose share option under Add On Menu for Highlight Tool

3. Share that doc or embed the writing on a current doc that you share with your students and have them import it.
